Integrating electricals into kerbside collections
Wolverhampton Council introduced weekly kerbside collections for small electricals and batteries by fitting cages to existing waste vehicles.
Residents left electricals and batteries next to their bins, and trained crews collected items during normal waste rounds, recording data using in-cab systems. Digital campaigns and BBC coverage promoted the service.
The pilot collected 18 tonnes of electricals at the kerbside in 12 months – 43% more than the previous year. The scheme has become part of the council’s regular recycling service.
