Libraries as recycling points
Renfrewshire Council introduced small electrical recycling bins in 12 libraries, making it easier for residents to recycle locally while also increasing footfall to public buildings.
Separate battery bins improved safety, and trained library staff helped residents use the service correctly.
Supported by social media and adverts on vehicles, the pilot collected 2.2 tonnes of electricals and 0.24 tonnes of batteries in 12 months. Total electrical waste recycling across the area rose by 17%, while contamination in general waste collections fell.
